Cloudy Urine: Men vs. Women
Cloudy urine can have different causes for men and women. In men, it can be attributed to the presence of sperm in the urethra after sexual intercourse, resulting in froth and bubbles on the surface of the urine in the toilet bowl. Generally, sperm clears from the urethra within a few minutes in healthy men. However, if the urine remains consistently frothy, it could indicate underlying conditions such as an enlarged prostate (a possible sign of infection or cancer), epididymitis (swelling of the scrotum), or a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
On the other hand, in women who are not pregnant, cloudy urine is often caused by a yeast infection, endometriosis (presence of uterine tissue in the bladder), or an STD.
Causes of Bloody Urine
Bloody urine, also known as hematuria, can be caused by various factors. When investigating the presence of blood in the urine, doctors often start by examining the kidneys and urinary tract. Hematuria can be an indicator of several conditions such as infection, inflammation, injury, disease, or even cancer affecting the kidneys, bladder, prostate, or urethra. It is worth noting that the amount of blood in the urine can vary, ranging from visible during urination to only detectable through urine tests or lab analysis.
