Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments of Otitis Externa

Treatment: Ear Drops

When seeking treatment for otitis externa, your doctor may suggest the use of ear drops or a spray. These are available in four different types, and certain medications may even combine multiple types for more effective results. Antibiotic and acidic ear drops are specifically designed to fight against the bacteria causing the infection. On the other hand, corticosteroid ear drops work to alleviate inflammation and itchiness. Lastly, antifungal ear drops are effective in treating any fungal growth that may be present.

Treatment: Ear Wick

In cases of severe inflammation that block the ear canal, the effectiveness of ear drops or sprays may be reduced. To address this issue, a doctor may recommend the use of an ear wick. The ear wick is a small piece of cloth or gauze that is soaked in medicated drops and then inserted into the ear. This method ensures that the medication reaches the target area and provides maximum relief. It is important to note that an ear wick should not be confused with ear candling. Ear candling involves inserting a lit candle into the ear to remove earwax, but it is not effective against otitis externa and may actually cause further damage to the ear.
