Causes, Treatments, and Signs of Dermatophagia

Risk Factors for Dermatophagia

Research suggests that there may be a biological connection between dermatophagia and other body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), particularly among individuals who have immediate family members with these behaviors. Interestingly, many people who engage in dermatophagia are often unaware of their behavior. Some studies have also indicated a higher likelihood of comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or the presence of a genetic marker for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in individuals with dermatophagia. However, it is important to note that further research is needed to establish any definitive links between these factors.

Diagnosis

Identifying dermatophagia can be challenging for physicians. Since it is a relatively new mental health concept, some doctors may overlook it as a potential diagnosis. To confirm the presence of dermatophagia, it is essential that the condition causes distress or disrupts the individual’s daily functioning. Moreover, it is crucial to rule out the possibility of symptoms being attributed to another psychiatric or medical disorder, or as a side effect of medications.
