Common and Unusual Causes of Dark Urine

Dark, Solid Matter in Urine

One common occurrence that can lead to the presence of dark, solid matter in urine is lithotripsy. Lithotripsy is a medical procedure in which ultrasound shock waves are used to break up stones that are stuck in the tract between the kidney, bladder, and ureters. In some cases, this treatment may require the placement of a stent in the kidney to ensure the continuous flow of urine until all the stone fragments have been eliminated.

Purple Urine

Occasionally, urine in a collection bag may undergo a peculiar transformation and turn purple. Although this occurrence is relatively uncommon, it is not unheard of. The phenomenon is attributed to a chemical reaction between certain organisms in the body that produce indoxyl phosphatase and the substances present in the catheter or urine collection bag. Physicians and healthcare experts commonly refer to this peculiar condition as “purple urine bag syndrome” or PUBS. It is important to note that porphyria, a medical condition, can also lead to the urine acquiring a purple hue.
