Common Pathogens and How They Affect Us

Fungi: A Diverse Organism

Fungi, a diverse and fascinating organism, encompasses over 140,000 different types worldwide. Found in various habitats, fungi can thrive in soil, water, or establish symbiotic and parasitic relationships with plants and animals. While certain fungi offer advantages, such as producing chemicals utilized in cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, others can pose severe threats upon contact with the human body.

Hepatitis B Virus

Hepatitis B is a prevalent viral infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). While many individuals with hepatitis B fully recover, infants and children are at a higher risk of developing a chronic infection that can cause severe liver damage. Vaccines have been developed to prevent the contraction of HBV, but unfortunately, there is currently no cure for the virus. Transmission of HBV occurs through sexual contact, sharing of needles, accidental needle sticks, or from mother to baby during pregnancy.
