Nevertheless, when there is an inconsistency between what we believe and how we behave, it often leads to inner conflict known as cognitive dissonance. According to the theory of cognitive dissonance, individuals experience psychological turmoil when their thoughts or beliefs do not align with their actions. Similarly, holding two contradictory beliefs also gives rise to cognitive dissonance. Despite its unpleasant nature, cognitive dissonance can serve a purpose beyond just causing distress.


Understanding the History of Cognitive Dissonance

In the 1950s, Dr. Leon Festinger, an American psychologist, introduced the concept of cognitive dissonance. This theory emerged as a result of Festinger’s observation of a cult and its subsequent failure. Festinger proposed that individuals have a natural inclination to align their actions with their beliefs and thoughts. When this alignment is disrupted, a sense of discomfort arises, motivating individuals to resolve the inconsistencies and restore cognitive consonance or consistency.

To validate his theory, Dr. Festinger and his team of students at Stanford University conducted various laboratory experiments. The outcomes of these experiments provided substantial evidence in support of cognitive dissonance. Consequently, this theory has remained one of the most extensively researched and influential concepts in the field of social psychology.

Example 1: Ignoring the Dangers of Smoking

One common example of cognitive dissonance is the act of continuing to smoke despite being well aware of the numerous health risks associated with the habit. Despite the overwhelming medical evidence linking smoking to gum disease, emphysema, and cancer, individuals experiencing cognitive dissonance choose to overlook this information and maintain their smoking habit.

Example 2: Unhealthy Diet and Health-Conscious Lifestyle

Another real-world illustration of cognitive dissonance can be seen in individuals who desire to lead a health-conscious lifestyle but continue to indulge in an unhealthy diet. Despite their genuine aspiration to eat nutritious food and adopt healthy eating habits, they struggle to align their actions with their beliefs, resulting in the coexistence of contradictory thoughts and behaviors.
