Conflicting Beliefs and Actions and Cognitive Dissonance

Strategies for Resolving Cognitive Dissonance

Cognitive dissonance is a challenging emotional state that can be effectively managed and transformed. There are several strategies that individuals can employ to eliminate this discomfort. By incorporating more consonant beliefs or diminishing the significance of the dissonant beliefs, individuals can work towards alleviating cognitive dissonance. Another approach is to modify the dissonant belief in order to bring it into harmony with existing beliefs. Although eliminating cognitive dissonance requires effort, it is an achievable goal.

Using Positive Reinforcement to Lessen Cognitive Dissonance

Positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding behavior, is commonly associated with children and pets. However, it can also be effectively used to mitigate cognitive dissonance. Although it may not completely eliminate the issue, positive reinforcement has been found to weaken it, as shown in one of Dr. Festinger’s experiments conducted at Stanford University. In this study, it was hypothesized that the level of reward offered would directly influence the likelihood of experiencing cognitive dissonance. The results of the investigation supported this theory.
