Cooling Effects of Hot Drinks on Hot Days

Understanding the Science Behind Hot Drinks Cooling You Down

Many may find it counterintuitive, but there is a logical explanation as to why consuming hot drinks on hot days can actually help cool you down. Sweating is a natural process that occurs in every person (unless there are specific medical conditions preventing it). It plays a vital role in regulating body temperature and preventing overheating. When we sweat, the heat from our bodies causes the sweat to evaporate, effectively cooling us off. Interestingly, hot drinks can actually stimulate the body’s sweat response, leading to increased sweating and enhanced cooling. On the other hand, consuming cold drinks may hinder the sweat response, potentially resulting in higher body temperatures.

The Science Behind Sweat

Sweating is not just a natural bodily process to cool down the body; it is also a fascinating mathematical equation. For every gram of sweat that evaporates from the skin, approximately 2.43 kilojoules of energy is lost in the form of heat. This loss of energy plays a significant role in regulating our body temperature.

In a study conducted, it was found that the consumption of hot water resulted in a gain of 52 kilojoules of heat for the participants. However, after sweating, they experienced a loss of 108 kilojoules of heat, resulting in a net loss of 56 kilojoules. On the other hand, when the participants consumed cold drinks, they were cooled by 138 kilojoules. Interestingly, due to the reduced amount of sweating caused by the cold drink, they retained a total of 159 kilojoules of heat.

It is important to note that when the participants drank room temperature water, the amount of energy lost through sweat was roughly the same as the energy gained through water consumption.
