Is a Twindemic on the Horizon?
In the spring of 2022, the majority of schools and businesses have resumed regular operations across the nation. However, there seems to be a decrease in the adherence to preventive measures such as wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and isolating after testing positive for COVID-19. This relaxed approach has created an environment where both COVID-19 and the flu can easily spread. Already, there have been a reported 3,500,000 to 5,800,000 cases of flu, with approximately 34,000 to 69,000 individuals requiring hospitalization. The convergence of a highly contagious COVID-19 variant spreading throughout the country alongside a surge in flu cases could potentially lead to a twindemic.
The Importance of Vaccines
Vaccines play a crucial role in protecting individuals from COVID-19 and the flu. While it is still possible for vaccinated people to contract COVID-19, the risk of severe illness is significantly reduced. To ensure optimal protection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides guidelines on staying updated with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters. Additionally, flu vaccines are effective in minimizing the risk of severe illness. Extensive research supports the safety of receiving both flu and COVID-19 vaccinations concurrently.
