Crohn’s Disease Development and Flares

Causes of Crohn’s Disease

The exact cause of Crohn’s disease remains unknown to doctors. However, experts suggest that there might be a genetic factor involved as the condition tends to run in families. Individuals are more susceptible to developing Crohn’s if they have a family member, such as a parent or sibling, with the disease. Additionally, there is a possibility of an autoimmune component, whereby the gut bacteria stimulate the immune system, resulting in inflammation within the body.

Lifestyle and Other Factors

When it comes to developing Crohn’s disease, there are various lifestyle and other factors that can significantly increase the risk. One such factor is smoking, which has been found to double a person’s chances of developing the condition. Additionally, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics, or birth control pills has been associated with a slight increase in the risk of developing Crohn’s disease.

While there are no specific foods that have been directly linked to the development of Crohn’s disease, it is believed that consuming a high-fat diet may also be a risk factor. Therefore, it is advisable to maintain a balanced and healthy diet to reduce the risk of developing this chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
