Complications of Exostosis
Exostosis, although generally not associated with serious complications, can lead to certain issues if left untreated. One potential complication is the development of hearing loss and repeated infections in individuals with exostoses in the ear canal. This occurs when the growth becomes large and goes untreated. In such cases, surgery may be necessary to prevent further complications and restore normal hearing.
Prevention of Exostosis
Reducing the risk of exostosis, particularly the hereditary form, may not be entirely possible. However, there are measures that can be taken to minimize irritation and damage to bones and joints. Wearing properly fitting shoes that are not overly tight is one such measure. Additionally, maintaining good posture is important to reduce stress on the neck and back joints. Another way to alleviate stress and force on the bones and joints is to maintain a healthy weight.
It is advisable to avoid excessive high-impact exercises, such as running and jumping, as these activities can be harsh on the bones and joints. To lower the likelihood of developing exostoses in the ear canal, it is recommended to wear earplugs when swimming in cold water.
