Different Types of Dyssomnia

Understanding Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) is a sleep disorder characterized by rhythmic spasms in one or both legs during the initial stage of sleep. Many individuals suffering from this condition may not be aware of it, but they often find it difficult to achieve a restful sleep. Although PLMD is often mistaken for restless legs syndrome (RLS), there is a crucial distinction between the two. Individuals with RLS experience leg pain that prevents them from falling asleep, whereas those with PLMD already asleep when the uncontrollable spasms occur. Despite this difference, both conditions share similar effects such as fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness. As a result, the medications used to treat these disorders can sometimes overlap.

Understanding Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia, also known as excessive sleepiness, is a condition characterized by an uncontrollable need to sleep at any time during the day. This condition is often associated with other underlying disorders such as narcolepsy and sleep apnea. However, it can also develop as a result of obesity, head injuries, neurological diseases, and depression. To accurately diagnose hypersomnia, medical professionals may conduct blood tests or an electroencephalogram (EEG). As hypersomnia is considered a secondary condition, the initial focus of treatment involves addressing and managing the primary cause.
