Primary Bowel Resection: A Surgical Approach for Diverticulitis Treatment

Primary bowel resection is a surgical procedure commonly employed by doctors to address diverticulitis. The severity of inflammation in the bowel determines whether the patient requires open surgery or a laparoscopic procedure. During open surgery, the affected segments of the intestine are removed, and the remaining healthy segments are reconnected. Alternatively, in certain cases, surgeons can opt for a laparoscopic approach to remove the inflamed tissue and repair the intestines.

Bowel Resection with Colostomy: A Last Resort Treatment for Severe Diverticulitis

In cases of severe diverticulitis where the colon and rectum cannot be reconnected due to excessive inflammation, a bowel resection with colostomy may be necessary. This procedure involves creating an opening in the abdominal wall and connecting it to a healthy section of the colon, bypassing the inflamed area. By doing so, waste is able to pass through the newly created opening, known as a stoma, and collect in a bag. Once the inflammation subsides, surgeons can then reverse the colostomy and restore normal bowel function. However, it is important to note that this procedure typically requires a longer hospital stay.
