Eight Types of Spondylitis

Understanding Enteropathic Arthritis

Enteropathic arthritis is a type of spondylitis that commonly affects individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This particular form of arthritis is the most common extra-gastrointestinal problem experienced by people with IBD, with prevalence ranging from 17 to 39 percent. Despite its prevalence, the exact causes and mechanisms of enteropathic arthritis are not yet fully comprehended.

Scientists and researchers suggest that the development of enteropathic arthritis is likely influenced by a combination of genetic predisposition and bacterial infections in the gut. The presence of inflammation is believed to be a result of these factors working together.

Understanding Reactive Arthritis

Reactive arthritis is a condition that can impact several joints and lead to spondylitis in the spine. It typically occurs as a result of a bacterial or viral infection in another area of the body, such as the intestines, urinary tract, or genitals. While reactive arthritis and the resulting spondylitis are relatively uncommon, they usually resolve within a year. Individuals with this condition often experience pain in the lower back, which tends to be more severe during the night or upon waking up in the morning.
