Reducing the Risk of Tearing and Episiotomy
When it comes to childbirth, there are several interventions that can be utilized to minimize the likelihood of requiring an episiotomy or experiencing a perineal tear. One effective approach is to carefully consider labor positions, as certain positions can reduce stress on the perineum. Additionally, having a support person apply gentle pressure to the perineum as the baby’s head starts to emerge can provide added support and help prevent tears.
Perineal Massage: An Effective Approach to Preventing Episiotomy
Perineal massage is a widely recognized and effective technique for minimizing the need for episiotomies during childbirth. This intervention is highly recommended for expectant mothers, who are advised to begin the practice several weeks before their due date. By utilizing massage oil to reduce friction, the perineal area is gently manipulated by pulling the walls of the vagina outwards for approximately five minutes, three to four times per week.
