Complications of Dental Caries
Untreated dental caries can result in several complications that can significantly impact oral health. One of the most prevalent complications is tooth loss. Additionally, individuals with dental caries are at a higher risk of developing gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can progress to a more severe infection known as periodontitis, which affects the tooth sockets and jaw bones, ultimately leading to widespread tooth loss.
Advanced stages of dental caries can also give rise to abscesses. In severe cases, these abscesses can become septic and spread to the sinuses, causing further complications.
Risk Factors for Dental Caries
Developing dental caries, commonly known as cavities, is a possibility for anyone, but certain individuals are more susceptible than others. Older adults and children are particularly prone to tooth decay. Additionally, nighttime feeding of babies can contribute to an increased risk of caries, as food particles remain on their teeth for an extended period while they sleep. Acid reflux is another factor that can lead to dental caries, as the stomach acid can erode tooth enamel. Similarly, individuals with eating disorders such as bulimia are at a higher risk of dental caries due to the contact between stomach acid and their teeth during purging episodes.
