Facet Arthropathy and Spinal Arthritis

Disease Process

Osteoarthritis symptoms can vary in severity depending on the progression of the disease. Typically, individuals with osteoarthritis experience pain either during or after physical activity. As the cartilage continues to deteriorate, the pain intensifies. In addition to pain, swelling and stiffness may also occur. Eventually, the loss of flexibility worsens, leading to a sensation of grating between the joints as more cartilage erodes. Furthermore, the affected joints can develop bone spurs.

General Symptoms

Facet arthropathy is often characterized by back pain, which is the primary and most prevalent symptom. This type of pain is unique as it is felt deep within the back and tends to worsen when standing, but it can be relieved by lying down. Typically, intermittent low back pain is the initial indicator that something is amiss. In addition to back pain, individuals may experience other symptoms such as spinal curvature, a stooped posture, and hip deformities. It is important to note that these symptoms do not progress steadily and can fluctuate, occasionally even becoming permanent.
