PICC Line Placement Sites
When it comes to the placement of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line, adults typically have it inserted in their arm, just above the elbow. However, for children, alternative sites such as the neck or leg may be considered. It is important to note that certain areas, such as lymph node dissection sites, blocked blood vessels, burns, or extensive scar tissue on the arm, are not suitable locations for a PICC line insertion. Moreover, specific medical procedures like shoulder surgery, vascular surgery, pacemaker implantation, or radiation treatments may necessitate the placement of the PICC line in a different site altogether.
Procedure for Inserting a PICC Line
When performing a PICC line insertion, the length of the line may be adjusted based on the patient’s size. The first step is to numb the chosen site where the line will be inserted. After the site is numb, doctors make a small incision to gain access to the blood vessel.
With caution and care, the PICC line is then threaded through the blood vessel towards the heart. As the line progresses, it reaches the larger chest vein where it is securely positioned. Unlike traditional methods using tape, the tubing and port of the PICC line may be sutured at the insertion site for added stability.
Once the line is securely in place, the guide wire is removed, completing the PICC line insertion procedure.
