Facts About PICC Lines

Signs of Infection

When it comes to identifying signs of infection, there are several key indicators to be aware of. One common sign is a fever of 100 degrees or higher, which often indicates the presence of an infection in the body. Additionally, if you notice any redness, pain, or inflammation around the site, this could also be a clear indication of an infection.

Another potential sign to watch out for is a burning sensation in the shoulder, chest, back, or arm. While this could be a sign of infection, it’s important to consider that shoulder or chest pain might actually be related to heart irritation caused by the PICC line being too close to the heart.

In some cases, the site where the PICC line is inserted may begin to ooze, or the individual may experience muscle stiffness and difficulty with movement. These symptoms can also be indicative of an infection, and it is crucial for the individual to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any of these signs.

Blood Clots: A Potential Complication of PICC Line Insertion

When medical personnel insert a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line, they use ultrasound to obtain a detailed view of the blood vessels. This allows them to determine which blood vessels are sufficiently large to accommodate the PICC line. The diameter of the vein is a crucial factor in this decision-making process. There must be enough space around the line to ensure proper blood flow. If there is insufficient space, blood clots can form.

If these blood clots break loose, they can travel through the bloodstream and reach the lungs, causing a potentially life-threatening condition known as a pulmonary embolism. This occurs when the blood supply to the lungs is disrupted by the presence of a clot. In the event that a blood clot forms at the site of the PICC line insertion, both the PICC line and the clot must be promptly removed.

After the removal of a clot-related PICC line, it may take several months before medical professionals consider it safe to reinsert a new PICC line. This cautious approach is necessary to ensure the prevention of further complications.

It is important to be aware of potential signs and symptoms of blood clots, such as shortness of breath or an irregular heartbeat. If any of these indications are present, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention to rule out the presence of a clot and prevent further complications.
