Facts About PUPPP Rash

Duration of PUPPP: How long does it last?

When it comes to PUPPP, the duration of this itchy rash varies for different individuals. However, for most women, the rash typically resolves within a week after giving birth. Unfortunately, some women may experience the persistence of PUPPP even into the postpartum period. In rare and severe cases, healthcare professionals may suggest inducing labor at 37 weeks to avoid the necessity of undergoing potent steroid treatments that may be required otherwise.

Is it PUPPP or another condition?

When experiencing itchiness during pregnancy, it’s important for women who suspect PUPPP to consult with their medical team to rule out any other conditions. Itchiness can be caused by benign allergic reactions or temporary contact dermatitis. Another condition that can cause itchiness during pregnancy is cholestasis of pregnancy, which involves the liver and can lead to complications if left untreated. Unlike PUPPP, cholestasis itchiness often affects the hands. Additionally, pregnant women, typically in their second trimester, can develop pemphigoid gestationis, an autoimmune skin disease. A physician can investigate the itchiness, identify the cause, and provide appropriate treatment as necessary.
