Facts About the Kidneys

Kidneys Can Regenerate, but Not Nephrons

Contrary to popular belief, it is not only the liver that possesses the remarkable ability to fully regenerate. Recent findings from Harvard Medical School have shed light on the regenerative potential of kidneys. Researchers have discovered that kidneys may also utilize stem cells to rebuild themselves. While this discovery is undoubtedly significant, it is important to note that the regenerated tissue does not include nephrons.

Kidneys: The Producers and Excreters of Ammonia

Within the intricate metabolic processes occurring in the kidneys, glutamine, an essential amino acid, plays a vital role. One of its important functions is to assist in the breakdown of carbohydrates. Interestingly, this metabolic process produces ammonia as a byproduct. Astonishingly, about half of the ammonia produced is eliminated through the urine, while the remaining half is recycled back into the bloodstream and eventually sent to the liver for further processing.
