Emergency Treatment for Tonsil Abscesses
Tonsil abscesses can become life-threatening in extreme cases, as they can cause severe swelling that obstructs the airway and hinders normal breathing. To address this critical situation, medical professionals will promptly take action to restore breathing and open the airway. The primary method used to achieve this is by draining the excess pus from the abscess. This involves inserting a needle into the abscess and extracting the accumulated pus, thereby providing relief and resolving the obstruction.
Non-Emergency Drainage
When the abscess requires drainage but is not considered an emergency, medical professionals employ certain procedures. To alleviate pain, a local anesthetic is injected around the affected area. In cases where the patient is highly distressed, a sedative may also be administered. Drainage can be achieved through the aspiration of pus using a needle. Alternatively, a small incision may be made in the abscess using a scalpel, allowing the pus to drain and promoting a reduction in swelling.
