Finding and Understanding a Normal Pulse Rate

Assessing Pulse Rate in the Lower Extremities

When evaluating the pulse rate in the lower extremities, several key points are considered. These include the femoral pulse, located at the upper inside part of the leg, the popliteal pulse, found behind the knee, and the pedal pulse, located on the top of the foot. Among these, the femoral pulse is particularly sensitive to changes associated with septic shock, making it a commonly assessed indicator during resuscitation efforts.

Assessing the Carotid Pulse

When evaluating a person’s pulse, one important location to consider is the carotid pulse. Situated on both sides of the neck, the carotid arteries are responsible for transporting oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain. To locate this pulse, place your fingers just below the jawline, on each side of the front of the neck. It is crucial to check the carotid pulse during CPR administration for adults.
