About the Images
When it comes to imaging the colon, one method involves exposing the abdomen to radiation. This allows for clear visualization of the colon by highlighting the contrast in density between the barium-filled colon and other abdominal structures on an X-ray. In addition to this, static images of the colon can be obtained through plain X-ray film or computerized digital imaging. After the initial imaging, most of the barium is drained, leaving only a small amount that adheres to the lining of the colon. To expand the colon, air is introduced, and additional X-rays are taken to provide a more detailed view of the colon’s lining. This particular imaging technique, known as a double contrast barium enema, utilizes both air and barium to produce the images. It is especially effective in identifying polyps and small cancers within the colon.
