Frequently Asked Questions about a Detached Retina

Can Medications Alone Treat a Detached Retina?

Regrettably, medications alone cannot effectively treat a detached retina. However, in rare cases, a detached retina may resolve itself without surgical intervention. This can occur if the underlying condition that led to the detachment is successfully treated.

How Common is Detached Retina?

Detached retina is not a commonly occurring condition. It is estimated that only around eight out of every 10,000 individuals develop this condition. While it is a rare occurrence, it can have serious implications for vision. Although a detached retina can occur at any age, it is more commonly seen in older individuals. Research published in the Journal of Medical Association suggests that retinal tears often begin with the onset of flashes, which serve as warning signs for a detached retina. In fact, up to 50 percent of individuals with a retinal tear experience these flashes as early symptoms.
