Not Every Case of Hypospadias Requires Surgery
While many cases of hypospadias do require surgical intervention, there are some instances where surgery may not be necessary. In certain cases, hypospadias is purely cosmetic and does not impact the functioning of the urethra or other sexual organs. It is only the mildest cases that may not require surgical correction. However, there are situations where hypospadias can obstruct urination and cause discomfort during urination. In the most severe cases, surgery may be performed in multiple stages. Often, surgical correction is pursued for cosmetic reasons due to the potential social stigma that may arise as the child grows older.
Is Circumcision Recommended for Children with Hypospadias?
When a child is born with hypospadias, it is generally advised not to proceed with circumcision. This is because the excess skin present on the foreskin can be utilized as a skin graft during the surgical procedure aimed at correcting the condition. It is crucial to exercise extra caution to prevent infection from the time of the baby’s birth until the corrective surgery is performed. Mothers of infants with hypospadias should receive additional guidance on the appropriate care and cleaning of the penis to minimize the risk of infection.
