Are Pterygium and Pinguecula Related?
Pterygium, also known as swimmer’s eye, is a more severe condition that shares similarities with pinguecula. Both conditions occur in the same location in the eye, but pterygium is characterized by a fleshy and pink growth that can extend over the iris. Unlike pinguecula, if left untreated, pterygium can lead to blindness and can also affect vision by altering the shape of the cornea. Similar to pinguecula, pterygium is believed to be primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
