Genetic Factors
Genetic factors play a significant role in determining various physical characteristics of our bodies, including fertility. Certain gene conditions, such as Turner Syndrome and Fragile X Syndrome, are known to increase the risk of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI). It has been observed that almost 30 percent of women with POI have a genetic component. Among these conditions, Fragile X syndrome is the most common genetic form of intellectual and developmental disability. If a woman carries the mutated gene responsible for Fragile X syndrome, she is more likely to experience POI.
Understanding Turner Syndrome
Turner syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the normal development of females. It is characterized by the absence or partial absence of the second X chromosome, which is typically present in most women. As a result, individuals with Turner syndrome often experience primary ovarian insufficiency, also known as ovarian hypofunction.
