Progression of Gallbladder Sludge
Gallbladder sludge can have different progression patterns, which largely depend on its underlying cause. In cases where the sludge is caused by pregnancy or other identifiable factors, it typically resolves itself once the cause is treated. However, there are instances where gallbladder sludge may appear and disappear intermittently. Moreover, if left untreated, it can develop into gallstones or even obstruct the ducts.
Cholecystitis: Inflammation of the Gall Bladder
Cholecystitis, also known as inflammation of the gall bladder, is a common complication associated with gallbladder sludge. When sludge blocks or narrows the duct leading out of the gallbladder, bile is unable to flow properly, resulting in inflammation. If left untreated, cholecystitis can lead to severe complications, often requiring the surgical removal of the gallbladder. Symptoms of cholecystitis include pain in the upper abdomen that may radiate to the shoulder or back, along with vomiting, nausea, and fever.
