Research on Orthotic Supports
Over the years, foot specialists have commonly recommended orthotic supports, including specially designed insoles and shoes, to address the issue of overpronation. However, recent research has raised concerns about the potential drawbacks of using such implements. A study conducted in 2017 highlighted that runners who used a medially wedged insole to correct overpronation experienced a decrease in knee and hip range of motion.
Reconditioning: Strengthening the Plantar Intrinsic Foot Muscles
Studies conducted in 2019 have revealed that reconditioning and strengthening the plantar intrinsic foot muscles can significantly enhance their ability to support the medial longitudinal arch in the foot. This research suggests that by activating these muscles during regular walking, it is possible to prevent the arch from deforming and to effectively treat or even prevent lower extremity injuries associated with flat foot.
