Dealing with diarrhea caused by a stomach virus or gastrointestinal problems can be challenging, especially when certain foods worsen digestive discomfort. However, there is a solution – the BRAT diet. The BRAT diet consists of bland, easily digestible foods that aid in solidifying stool and alleviating diarrhea. While the acronym stands for Bananas, Rice, Apples, and Toast, additional foods are also included in this dietary approach.


Understanding the BRAT Diet

The BRAT diet is based on the principle of consuming foods that are gentle on the digestive system while still offering essential nourishment. Initially designed for children, this diet can be beneficial for individuals dealing with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Bananas, for instance, are rich in potassium and can help replenish lost nutrients caused by vomiting or diarrhea. On the other hand, rice, applesauce, and toast are low-fiber binding foods that aid in solidifying bowel movements. Many people choose to follow this diet as a way to gradually transition back to regular eating habits after experiencing digestive issues.


What to Eat and When to Eat After Vomiting or Diarrhea

Following episodes of vomiting or diarrhea, it is important to allow your stomach to rest for a minimum of six hours, as recommended by doctors. To ensure proper hydration, it is advised to consume frequent but small amounts of water. As you progress in your recovery, you can gradually introduce clear liquids into your diet. These may include bone broth, apple juice, weak tea, or flat soda.

On the subsequent day, it is advisable to consume small portions of foods that are part of the BRAT diet, such as bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. Additionally, you can incorporate other easily digestible foods like oatmeal, grits, crackers, or porridge into your meals. As you continue to recover, you can start reintroducing soft foods into your diet on the third day. This may include cooked vegetables, fruits, or soft-cooked eggs.
