Hands-On vs Hands-Off Birth Techniques

Benefits of an Active Approach

For centuries, hands-on techniques have been employed to alleviate discomfort and facilitate childbirth. Certain hands-on methods, such as massaging oil onto the perineum or placing warm compresses against it, can enhance flexibility in the area prior to delivery. When it comes to the actual birthing process, a midwife utilizing a hands-on approach is well-positioned to make adjustments to the baby’s head position and gently guide the baby out.

Drawbacks of a Hands-On Approach

Not all hands-on techniques yield the same results. Even slight variations in finger placement or positioning can actually increase the pressure on the perineum by up to 104%, rather than reducing it. Although some studies suggest that hands-on approaches may lead to a slight reduction in postpartum pain and tearing, the overall advantage is often minimal.
