Health Benefits of Basil

Basil: A Natural Remedy for Arthritic Pain

A recent study conducted in India has revealed that various types of basil extracts, including holy basil and hoary basil, possess remarkable properties to alleviate swelling and pain associated with arthritis. The research findings indicate that these basil extracts can reduce joint swelling by an impressive 73 percent. Lead researcher Vaibhav Shinde also observed that basil has a similar impact to the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac. The study further suggests that eugenol, a phytochemical found in basil’s essential oils, may be responsible for its powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

May Provide Liver Protection

A recent study conducted by Beni-Suef University revealed that basil possesses hepatoprotective effects, which essentially means that it aids in safeguarding the liver. The antioxidant properties present in basil play a crucial role in shielding the liver from potential damage. Notably, holy basil has demonstrated the ability to protect laboratory animals from liver injury caused by acetaminophen. However, further research is necessary to fully comprehend the extent of basil’s liver-protecting capabilities. Another study conducted on laboratory rats observed that those fed with basil extract exhibited a reduction in the accumulation of fat within the liver. This reduction in fat accumulation is significant as excessive build-up can lead to liver disease.
