When Symptoms of Hirschsprung Disease Become Apparent

While Hirschsprung disease is a congenital condition, the symptoms may not become apparent immediately after birth. Typically, children start exhibiting symptoms and receive a formal diagnosis within the first year of their life. However, it is worth noting that approximately 10 percent of cases involve children who are not diagnosed until after their first year. Additionally, there is a rare percentage, approximately one percent, of individuals who remain asymptomatic and do not receive a diagnosis until they reach their teenage years.

Newborn Symptoms of Hirschsprung Disease

When it comes to Hirschsprung disease, newborns are often the most affected, with symptoms usually appearing early on. One telltale sign is the absence of bowel movements within the first two days of life. In addition, infants may also experience brown or green vomit, abdominal swelling, bloody diarrhea, and explosive stools following a rectal examination by a medical professional.
