Side Effects: Ataxia
Ataxia is a medical condition characterized by a decline in coordination and a tendency to stumble. The consumption of quinine can lead to the development of cerebellar ataxia, a specific type of ataxia that affects all layers of the cerebellum. As a result, the brain’s capacity to coordinate muscle movements is compromised. Although this condition may resolve itself after the discontinuation of treatment, certain individuals may need to undergo physical therapy in order to regain their previous level of functionality.
Side Effects: Quinine Sensitivity
Quinine sensitivity can lead to various side effects, including a condition called quinine-induced thrombocytopenia. This occurs when the drug triggers the production of antibodies that destroy platelets, which are responsible for blood clotting. As a result, individuals with a low platelet count may face an elevated risk of uncontrolled bleeding. Typically, this condition is accompanied by the appearance of purpura, which are blood spots that may develop on the skin or in the mouth. Fortunately, thrombocytopenia can be effectively treated with the use of corticosteroids.
