How Bulimia Affects Health

Possible Genetic Link

Separation anxiety disorder and overanxious disorder are two conditions that can cause individuals to experience excessive anxiety. In a 2005 study, it was discovered that these disorders have a genetic link and are commonly associated with the development of eating disorders in juvenile twin girls. While there are multiple factors that contribute to the manifestation of an eating disorder, it has been found that anxiety and depression disorders during childhood can increase the risk of developing bulimia during adolescence.

Likelihood of Fetal Complications

Women with bulimia often face challenges in getting pregnant due to the absence of regular menstrual cycles. When they do become pregnant, the risks of miscarriage, stillbirth, and fetal death are significantly higher. The continuous use of laxatives and diuretics by many women with bulimia further contributes to pregnancy complications. These substances deprive the developing fetus of essential nutrients and fluids, leading to inadequate fetal growth and potential abnormalities.
