Pseudoaldosteronism
Pseudoaldosteronism is a condition that imitates primary aldosteronism, resulting in symptoms like hypertension and low plasma renin levels. Although closely associated with Liddle’s syndrome, pseudoaldosteronism differs in that it may not have an impact on aldosterone levels, or it may cause them to decrease. An intriguing cause of pseudoaldosteronism is the excessive consumption of licorice, particularly due to its active component, glycyrrhizin.
Complications of Hypertension
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, can lead to several complications that can significantly impact a person’s health. These complications include kidney problems, stroke, and heart failure. One of the serious complications of hypertension is left ventricle hypertrophy, which refers to the enlargement of the walls of the left ventricle of the heart. This occurs as the heart works harder to pump blood throughout the body.
Another complication that can arise due to hypertension is low potassium levels in the body. This can result in muscle cramps, excessive thirst, and increased urination. Since potassium is an essential electrolyte, a decrease in its levels can lead to cardiac arrhythmia, which further increases the risk of a heart attack.
