How Serious is Mottled Skin?

Infections

Various types of infections can cause skin mottling. Common culprits include viral, bacterial, and fungal infections. Tuberculosis, syphilis, parvovirus, and hepatitis C are among the most common infections that can lead to this condition. Additionally, mottled skin can also be a sign of bacterial sepsis resulting from streptococcal or meningococcal diseases. In rare cases, a persistent livedo reticularis can be caused by a form of cytomegalovirus infection.

Effects of Drugs and Medications on Skin Mottling

The development of skin mottling can also be attributed to the use of drugs, medications, and various methods of administration. One example of this is the temporary occurrence of livedo reticularis, which can be caused by inserting a needle into the skin. Additionally, skin mottling is a potential side effect of several medications commonly used to treat conditions such as multiple sclerosis, ADHD, narcolepsy, and Parkinson’s disease.
