How the Stress of Negative Self-Talk Affects Your Health

Effects of Negative Emotions on the Immune System

Research has shown a correlation between negative emotions and a weakened immune response in individuals, particularly when they dwell on distressing thoughts or periods in their lives. A study conducted on this topic involved participants being asked to recall a painful negative event from their past. During this study, researchers measured the participants’ brain activity and also administered a flu shot. The results of follow-up assessments revealed a clear connection between the pre-frontal cortex, the area of the brain associated with depression, and a compromised immune response. Although scientists have not yet fully comprehended the exact mechanism by which negative thoughts impact lymphocytes, it is believed to involve a complex interplay of hormones.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), such as irritable bowel syndrome, are characterized by recurring episodes of diarrhea and constipation. Recent studies have been investigating the potential psychosomatic relationship between depression, anxiety, and the exacerbation of FGIDs. Interestingly, certain gastroenterologists have found success in treating FGIDs by prescribing antidepressant medication, indicating that the connection between psychiatry and gastroenterology has been recognized for many years.
