Confronting the Inner Critic
Feelings of loneliness stem from within and flourish through negative thought patterns. If left unaddressed, these emotions can cause us to avoid social situations and isolate ourselves from meaningful connections. Our inner critic often reinforces and exacerbates feelings of loneliness and seclusion with discouraging thoughts such as:
To overcome our inner critic, it is crucial to recognize that its perspective is distorted and unreliable. It is an adversary that can be conquered by disregarding its negative insinuations. We can counter this internal nemesis by practicing self-affirmation and cultivating positive thoughts about ourselves. Let us extend the same compassion to ourselves that we would to a friend engaged in this struggle.
Wireless Connection, Social Disconnection
While our electronic devices are designed to connect us digitally, it is important to remember that as humans, we thrive on in-person community. Unfortunately, many individuals, both young and old, are spending excessive amounts of time on social media platforms instead of engaging in real-life social interactions. According to a Nielsen survey, the average adult spends around 11 hours per day interacting online. However, this constant online presence may only create an illusion of connectedness.
A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2017 revealed that young adults who spend more than two hours per day on social media experience twice the level of loneliness compared to those who spend only 30 minutes. Instead of relying on the internet to alleviate feelings of loneliness or boredom, it is important to consider limiting screen time and actively seek opportunities to spend quality time with others in person.
