Impostor Syndrome and Persistent Feelings of Inadequacy

Understanding the Different Types of Impostor Syndrome

Impostor syndrome, a phenomenon that affects individuals in various ways, is commonly categorized into five distinct sub-types. It is important to note that these sub-types primarily focus on how individuals respond to negative thought patterns, rather than the actual thought process itself. The core of each sub-type is influenced by an individual’s perception of themselves and their abilities.

The Perfectionist Sub-Type

The perfectionist sub-type of impostor syndrome is characterized by the belief that success can only be achieved through flawless performance. Individuals who experience this sub-type often feel that they have not truly succeeded unless every aspect of their work is executed to perfection. Even when they receive praise and validation for a job well done, they struggle to accept it, feeling as though it is undeserved. They constantly dwell on perceived mistakes or flaws in their performance, always striving to improve and do better.
