Insufficient Neutrophils and Genetic Kostmann Syndrome

Treatment and Management

When it comes to Kostmann syndrome, the main focus of treatment is to prevent infection. This means that any instance of fever or suspected infection should be promptly addressed by seeking medical attention at a hospital. To help prevent infections, doctors often prescribe preventative antibiotics. Additionally, hematopoietic growth factors can be used to temporarily correct neutropenia, either on a continuous basis or to specifically treat an infection. It is important to note, however, that long-term use of growth factors can increase the risk of developing leukemia, so this approach is not typically preferred. In certain cases, a bone marrow transplant may be considered by the medical team.

Prognosis for Kostmann Syndrome

Advancements in the management of infection and quality of care have significantly improved the prognosis for individuals with Kostmann syndrome. However, the outlook still depends on timely identification and treatment of the condition. In the event of a malignancy such as leukemia, a bone marrow transplant can greatly alter the prognosis, leading to a better outcome.
