Interesting Facts About Birthmarks

Cafe-au-lait spots: A Closer Look at Skin Pigmentation

Cafe-au-lait spots, also known as “coffee with milk” spots, are flat patches of skin that appear darker than the surrounding skin. These spots are typically light brown on individuals with lighter skin tones, while they may be darker on those with darker skin tones. Commonly referred to as “giraffe spots,” cafe-au-lait spots are generally harmless and may gradually fade over time, although complete disappearance is unusual. However, it is worth noting that multiple cafe-au-lait spots can rarely be an indication of an underlying condition, such as neurofibromatosis.

Mongolian Spots: Mysterious and Harmless Birthmarks

Mongolian spots, also known as dermal melanocytosis, are intriguing dark grey-blue birthmarks that often appear on the backs or bottoms of babies with darker skin tones. Despite their resemblance to bruises, these spots are completely harmless and not caused by any injury. The formation of Mongolian spots occurs when the pigment in the skin fails to reach the surface layer, although the exact reason behind this phenomenon remains unknown. It is worth noting that while these spots usually fade with time, they may not completely disappear.
