Interesting Facts About Birthmarks

Port-wine stains: An Overview

Port-wine stains, also known as firemarks, are vascular birthmarks that commonly appear on the face but can manifest anywhere on the body. These birthmarks are characterized by red or purplish marks that do not fade over time and may even increase in size as the child grows. Research has shown that port-wine stains occur in only three to five out of every 1,000 births. In most cases, these birthmarks are harmless. However, if older children feel self-conscious about their appearance, there are laser treatments available that can help reduce their visibility.

When should treatment be considered for birthmarks?

Although birthmarks are typically harmless, it is important for children with certain types of birthmarks to consult a dermatologist for evaluation. Specifically, those with vascular birthmarks like hemangiomas and port-wine stains should seek medical attention, especially if the birthmark is located near the eyes, nose, or mouth. This precaution is necessary because port-wine stains have been associated with two rare conditions: Sturge-Weber syndrome, a neurological disorder, and Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, a condition that affects tissue development. By consulting a doctor, these potential issues can be ruled out or properly addressed.
