Invasive or Invaluable? Bitter Vine as Medicine

Reducing Stress: The Power of Bitter Vine

Research conducted on rats has revealed that extracts from bitter vine have a significant impact on reducing stress levels. In this study, scientists focused on examining the physical manifestations of stress by subjecting the animal participants to a swimming endurance test and analyzing liver samples. Astonishingly, bitter vine extracts were found to enhance the rats’ endurance capabilities and even reverse some of the detrimental effects of stress on their organs. These findings have the potential to pave the way for the development of anti-anxiety medications as well as life-extending treatments.

Folk Medicine Uses

The traditional use of bitter vine in folk medicine has been practiced by indigenous communities in Central America and the Caribbean for hundreds of years. One of its common applications is as a component of poultices used to treat snake bites and insect stings. The bitter vine leaves are known to alleviate pain and reduce the risk of infection.

In Jamaica, bitter vine is commonly used for dressing wounds due to its perceived ability to facilitate faster healing of sores and cuts.
