Irish Sea Moss: Health Benefits Beyond the Hype

Harnessing the Cancer-Fighting Power of Sea Moss

Exploring the potential of sea moss, a recent study has shed light on the chemopreventive properties of two bioactive compounds found in this marine plant – porphyran and carrageenan. These compounds have shown remarkable promise in selectively targeting and destroying tumor cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Moreover, the study also suggests that they synergistically enhance the effectiveness of conventional cancer drugs, leading to improved treatment outcomes.

Concerns Over Carrageenan and Cancer

There have been growing concerns regarding the use of carrageenan as a thickening agent in various food products. In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified this derivative of sea moss as “a possible human carcinogen” back in 1983. However, it is important to note that the potential health risks are primarily associated with processed carrageenan, which is derived from seaweed and subjected to chemical modifications. This processed form has been suggested to have the ability to induce inflammation and potentially contribute to the development of cancer.
