Melatonin, a hormone responsible for regulating sleep-wake cycles, exhibits dynamic fluctuations throughout the day. As evening approaches, its levels gradually increase, signaling the body to prepare for sleep. Conversely, a few hours before waking up, melatonin levels start to decrease, indicating the body to transition into a wakeful state. However, when the expected rise in melatonin levels fails to occur during the evening, it can pose challenges for children and their parents during bedtime.


Common Causes of Sleep Problems in Children

Various factors can contribute to sleep problems in children. While disorders like autism can disrupt sleep patterns, there are other conditions that may also be responsible for sleep disturbances in kids. Conditions such as circadian rhythm disorders or mental health disorders can interfere with a child’s ability to sleep. In some cases, chronic insomnia in children may be a sign of an underlying health condition that has yet to be diagnosed. Conversely, there are instances where doctors are unable to pinpoint the exact cause of sleep difficulties in certain children.
