With the emergence of trypophobia as a relatively new phenomenon, individuals are turning to online communities to gain a better understanding of this condition. As a result, there has been a surge in the number of trypophobic images circulating on social media platforms. Disturbingly, many of these images are intentionally created to provoke the phobia. Particularly, images depicting holes edited onto human skin have gained immense popularity due to their ability to generate intense triggers.


Appearance in Pop Culture

In popular culture, trypophobia gained significant attention in 2017 when it was featured in the television show American Horror Story. The show depicted a character with trypophobia and utilized several visually disturbing images in its promotional materials. This portrayal generated a considerable amount of controversy, but it also succeeded in bringing greater recognition to the condition. More recently, Apple introduced the iPhone 11 Pro, which incorporates multiple camera lenses arranged closely together. This design choice prompted numerous individuals to express their discomfort on social media, claiming that the layout triggered their trypophobia.
