Living with Shingles

Possible Complications

Shingles can lead to various complications that should not be ignored. One such complication is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is characterized by a burning sensation in the affected area. If shingles blisters develop around the eye and are left untreated, it can result in vision loss. Additionally, an untreated shingles infection can occasionally lead to neurological problems like encephalitis or facial paralysis. It is important to seek medical attention as shingles can also cause bacterial infections in the skin, hearing loss, or balance problems if not properly treated.

Prevention

Preventing shingles can be challenging if you have already had chickenpox. However, there are several measures you can take to minimize your risk. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and stress management can significantly reduce your chances of developing shingles.

For individuals over the age of 50, there is a vaccine available that can help lower the risk of contracting chickenpox. While it may not provide complete protection, studies have shown that it can prevent the condition in approximately nine out of ten people. To determine if the vaccine is suitable for you, it is recommended to consult with your healthcare provider.
