During metabolism, the nutrients we consume are combined with oxygen to produce the energy our body needs to carry out its functions effectively. Even when we are at rest and not engaged in any physical activity, our body still requires a certain amount of calories to maintain its basic functions. This is known as our basal metabolic rate, which represents the number of calories needed for our body to function properly.

Empty calories are a concept that may seem contradictory once we understand that calories are derived from protein, carbohydrates, and fats. However, it is essential to grasp the proper definition of this term. Empty calories refer to those calories that come from added sugar or solid fat, which provide minimal, if any, nutritional value.
